Overseas Adventure - Forgotten Magic

This post was written by a longtime friend of mine, Justin Brown. He’s a basketball junkie and has spent his free time during the lockout watching any kind of basketball he can.

Diehard Magic fans may be wondering if there are any other familiar faces still playing Overseas (no offense Earl Clark). Thought you’d never ask…

Steven Hunter F/C, Magic ’01-’04: The former Magic first-rounder hasn’t played a game of professional basketball in nearly two years, but he just signed with Dinamo Sassari in Italy last week. Hunter, who stands 7’0″, held averages of just 2.5 rebounds p/g in 3 seasons with the Magic. Not much else to say about Hunter except he now gets to play with a former Magic-fan favorite…

You can read more after the jump.

Travis Diener PG, Magic ’05-07: Magic fans who stuck through the rough years should remember Diener. Along with current NBA players Dwyane Wade and Steve Novak, Diener took Marquette University to the NCAA Final Four before being taken 38th overall by the Magic in ’05. Sassari’s club website has Diener officially listed as a Playmaker, meaning they use him at both the point and shooting guard postions. During the’11-’12 Italian Lega season, Diener has started all 3 games he’s played in while averaging 17.3ppg and 5.3 assists per game. Seems likely that Diener is still a fan favorite in Italy.

Orlando fans would probably like to forget this guy after he helped the Hawks eliminate the Magic in the first round of last season’s NBA playoffs. Zaza Pachulia signed with Galatasaray of the Turkish Basketball League during the NBA lockout, he does have an NBA opt-out. The Turkish club signed Pachulia to bolster the squad’s roster for its very first Euroleague appearance in history. Gala finished 2nd in the TBL last season thus qualifying for the ’11 Euroleague (top 3 TBL finishers qualify). Galatasaray is currently only 1-2 in Euroleague play and Zaza hasn’t started a game yet. Zaza may be from Europe but his game is best suited for the NBA. Successful Euro-bigs tend to have a more developed perimeter game, but they usually cannot bang in the paint like Pachulia does.

Stay posted to rediscover more Forgotten Magic during the NBA lockout.
