Last week it was reported that legendary coach Phil Jackson had interest in joining the Magic as an executive, but eventually decided against joining the Magic.
In this supposed arrangement, which was presented by Sam Vincent, Jackson would work in the front office and the Magic would hire a Hall of Famer without head coaching experience to be their coach. This plan would have then been presented to Dwight Howard in an attempt to convince him to sign a long term extension. In this scenario, most believe Howard would likely be unable to say no to Jackson.
The former player most theorized would be the coach is former Bulls great Scottie Pippen.
According to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated, the deal isn’t dead after the Magic saw a “revised plan” Tuesday.
According to the sources, the latest version of the proposal has Pacers assistant and ex-Lakers assistant Brian Shaw coaching the team and Hall of Famer and Bulls ambassador Scottie Pippen as the lead assistant. And as if Jackson’s potential price tag wasn’t daunting enough (he earned $12 million in his last year with the Lakers), one of the sources said he is asking for a slice of minority ownership in the franchise as well. The hope, of course, would be for Jackson to use his cachet to convince Dwight Howard to remain in Orlando for the long-term. Jackson’s agent, Todd Musburger, did not return a call for comment.
With Shaw in play as head coach, this could change things. We continue to hear that Magic brass prefers Shaw, but want to wait until a general manager is hired to make a move.
Amick went on to say Magic CEO isn’t a fan of the plan because he would prefer Orlando have an every-day office General Manager.
However, if Martins can land this package, it would be difficult to pass up.
