Per Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic and Jameer Nelson have agreed to push his player-option deadline from June 15 to June 29.
Now, after NBA officials on Thursday approved a request by Nelson and the Magic to amend Nelson’s current contract, Nelson will have until June 29.
Nelson and his agent, Steve Mountain, asked the Magic for a deadline extension because the team has not yet hired a general manager to replace Otis Smith. Nelson and Mountain want to learn what the eventual hire’s plans are for Nelson and for the rest of the team.
This makes a lot of sense for Nelson. By the 29th, the Magic will likely have hired a new General Manager and a new Head Coach. Plus, the draft is the 28th.
We’ve heard all along Nelson will eventually opt out.
However, if Nelson does wind up picking his option, he’ll be due just under $8 million.
