Magic Meeting With Lakers, Lakers “Pushing Hard” To Land Howard

Douglas Jones-US PRESSWIRE

According to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo, the Lakers are aggressively pursuing Dwight Howard.

Spears says the “Lakers pushing hard to land Magic center Dwight Howard & meeting with Magic today,” but they want a commitment to an extension on Howard’s part.

Spears also says the Rockets, who appear to be the current favorite to land Howard at the moment, “do not have a meeting set up with the Magic in regards to landing Dwight Howard.”

I don’t understand this insistence on a player signing an extension. I mean, I get why teams want that, but the current CBA is structured so that no player will do it.

An extension would sign Dwight through the 2015/16 season for $67,848,252.  Becoming a free agent after this year and signing a max, Bird Rights deal gets him through 2017/18 season for $121,985,429.  That’s 2 years and $54,137,177 of guaranteed money.

I’m not sure any player would do that and making it a requirement means no trade can ever happen.

you’re absolutely right. I think they want some sort of agreement that he would re-sign.

Either way, if the trade does go down, I can’t seem turning down the Lakers in a year.
