On Tuesday, it was reported Rob Murphy was leaving his job as head coach of Eastern Michigan to take a job with the Orlando Magic.
On Friday, Eastern Michigan athletic director Derrick Gragg announace Murphy was going to stay with EMU.
“I would like to end the speculation about my leaving Eastern Michigan University,” Murphy said in his statement. “I am pleased to confirm that I am remaining at EMU.”
According to the Detroit Free Press, “he would have been required to pay the university $210,000 to break his contract,” which must have contributed to the decision.
In a statement, Murphy said “It is true that I had an opportunity to join the Orlando Magic. Representatives of the Magic were both professional in their approach and respectful of our situation at EMU. I am very appreciative of the opportunity to have spoken with them and would like to publicly thank them for their professionalism and interest.”
