Through seven preseason games Victor Oladipo leads all rookies in minutes played (192), points (101), field goals made (37), field goals attempted (86), free throws made and attempted (20 and 25), defensive rebounds (34), assists (35), steals (11), turnovers (24), and efficiency (113).
Now, comparing preseason statistics – especially with such a maligned rookie class – is generally a hollow exercise. However, this is the reason why Oladipo is the odds on favorite to win Rookie of the Year.
Oladipo is going to have his struggles with turnovers and outside shooting this season, but he’s the most versatile and polished rookie coming in the league, and Orlando can afford to play him for long stretches without worrying about his efficiency. He’s a swiss-army-knife talent that can be productive even when he isn’t scoring.
