The Orlando Magic lost to the New York Knicks despite 26 points from Arron Afflalo and Carmelo Anthony’s sprained ankle. It was their 5th loss in a row at Amway Arena and their 9th in 11 games. After falling behind 65-41 at halftime, the Magic scored 35 in the 3rd quarter by pounding the ball inside, but it was too little too late against the Knicks.
Arron Afflalo: A-
It was another hyper efficient game for Afflalo, who went 5-7 from 3 to go along with 5 boards and 5 assists. He continues to be the only source of reliable offense for this team. The only negative was that he allowed the Knick shooting guards to make 5 3′s of their own. The Knicks shot 47.6% from behind the arc, and exploited the Magic’s perimeter defense all night.
Tobias Harris: C
Harris had the unenviable task of checking Carmelo Anthony, and despite keeping him from taking a shot until 5 minutes into the game, Anthony clearly got the best of him tonight. Harris pressed on offense, going 4-13 from the field but at least made a conscious effort to get to the line. If Carmelo had not gotten hurt, this game wouldn’t have been so close.
Jameer Nelson: B+
Nelson showed off his versatility tonight, scoring 17 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Orlando may be looking to trade Nelson, but they will clearly miss his steady hand on the offense. He doesn’t get a higher grade because he took 10 3′s, making only 3 of them.
Victor Oladipo: D
Oladipo is struggling in his return to a 6th man role. Despite 16 minutes, he had trouble asserting himself. Worse that scoring only 3 points? The Magic were -23 when he was on the court.
Beside Oladipo, the Magic bench only got 20 minutes of playing time total, but the starters will have plenty of time to rest before their next game on Friday vs. Detroit.
