Victor Oladipo has been named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December, joining elite Orlando Magic company. Magic legend Shaquille O’Neal won the award four times, while Penny Hardaway won it twice. Of course the award isn’t a guarantee of super-stardom, Dennis Scott and Mike Miller both won the award too, but it is a positive sign for a rookie still transitioning to the NBA and a new position.
Oladipo was second among Eastern rookies in points per game (12.7), assists per game (3.8) and steals (1.33). Despite playing point guard, he also pulled down 4.5 rebounds per game. His most memorable moment came on December 3rd against Philadelphia, where he recorded his first triple double of 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in an epic duel with 76ers’ rookie Michael Carter-Williams. Carter-Williams, November’s winner, has been struggling with injuries, paving the way for Oladipo to take the crown. Trey Burke won the award for the Western Conference, proving once again that point guard is the deepest position in the league.
