With the second worst record in the league, the Orlando Magic are busy scouting draft prospects, and according to ESPN’s Chad Ford, they have already found some players they like. The Magic have long been rumored to be interested in Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart as their point guard of the future, but the real news from Ford is that Orlando has Andrew Wiggins atop their draft board.
They like Marcus Smart and Wiggins and Parker too … If I were to order them right now I’d go: 1. Wiggins 2. Smart 3. Exum 4. Parker for the Magic.
What is clear from Ford’s list is that the Magic are going to be drafting based on talent over need. Orlando has built a roster full of versatile players, capable of playing multiple positions, meaning that they can approach the most talented draft class in years with an open mind. Tobias Harris can play both forward positions, Victor Oladipo is being groomed as a combo-guard, and Moe Harkless’ defense means he can play a variety of roles. Right now, Nikola Vucevic playing center seems to be the only position guarantee for next year. (Otherwise Joel Embiid would probably be on their list).
If the Magic finish the season with the second worst record, they will be guaranteed a top 5 selection and a shot at one of their targets. If they land the #1 pick, the exciting question becomes what will the do with it? Marcus Smart may be the team’s best chance to make the playoffs next season, but the potential of the other players is hard to pass up. Dante Exum may be a better fit next to Victor Oladipo because of his scoring ability, while Parker and Wiggins would bring star power back to the team.
