The Orlando Magic have “no urgency” to trade Arron Afflalo according to Sam Amik over at USA Today Sports. This is not news. You’ve heard that version of the story a hundred times, and are probably sick of it. But here’s the interesting part: Amik says the Magic want “a proven player who could help speed up their rebuilding efforts” in return.
Now that’s interesting. Especially considering that Afflalo is a proven player himself. The assumption from Magic fans has been that the team could trade Afflalo for draft picks in a continued effort to collect assets. Trading one productive veteran for another seems like treading water, unless Orlando Magic GM Rob Hennigan values Afflalo’s game less than any trade partner. Does that mean Hennigan believes that Afflalo’s breakout season has been fools gold?
Another possibility is that Hennigan doesn’t like the construct of his roster. So far this season it looks like Victor Oladipo is much more comfortable playing shooting guard. Even though Afflalo has been playing a lot of small forward this season, his size and post skills are much more valuable at shooting guard. Hennigan could be looking for a more natural small forward or possibly a point guard to replace Jameer Nelson.
Right now the Orlando Magic are only in “listening mode”, and it’s very likely that they do not trade Afflalo before the deadline. His trade value will be much higher this off-season around the NBA draft amid the league wide roster turnover without so many teams actively trying to lose games. If Amik’s report is correct, this pretty much closes the book on the Magic trading Afflalo at all. It just doesn’t make sense to trade your best offense of player, on a team friendly deal, for another veteran.
