The NBA’s trade deadline can be rough on players’ psyches. Rumors and uncertainty can creep into their minds and affect their play. After back to back bad losses to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers, it’s clear that the Magic have gotten into their heads. Still, coach Jacque Vaughn doesn’t feel the need to address the deadline with his team according to Evan Dunlap of Orlando Pinstriped Post.
“Absolutely not,” Vaughn told reporters, “it’s part of the business. They know it.” With only one rookie on the roster, all of these players have experienced a trade deadline before. And with Oladipo being untouchable, that shouldn’t be an issue. Still, nothing prepares you for the possibility of losing teammate at a moments notice. Jameer Nelson and Glen Davis, the two players most likely to be dealt, have been playing particularly poorly as the rumors heat up.
The lack of communication is surprising coming from Vaughn. Despite his shortcomings as a coach, he has a reputation of connecting with players because of his honest and open communication. His stance on the trade deadline seems to be in direct opposition to that strength. More likely, it means that Vaughn isn’t involved in the trade discussions, so doesn’t know what to tell the players. He doesn’t want to get caught in a lie, so says nothing at all.
