When Victor Oladipo missed Wednesday night’s game versus the Houston Rockets, it gave him a rare opportunity for extended rest in the midst of an NBA season. By missing the game with a sprained ankle, he got an extremely rare five days off in a row. For the rookie out of Indiana, it’s been like a post-collegiate spring break.
You remember those right? Sorority girls who miss their frat parties go to Las Vegas and Cancun to relive college for a week. Of course instead of going on vacation, Oladipo has been rehabbing, supporting his teammates and working on his game.
But if anyone deserves a vacation, it’s Oladipo. He has played 1982 minutes this year, more than his last two seasons at Indiana combined. That doesn’t include preseason, extra practices, and a busy All-Star Weekend.
When he’s on the court he’s playing like a mad man. Oladipo has run 139.2 miles during his games this season, good for 27th highest mileage in the league this season according to SportVU on NBA.com. He’s played 32.2 minutes per game, and no one who has played less minutes has run more miles.
Wednesday night’s DNP was Oladipo’s first of the season. He’s been incredibly durable considering the pounding he takes with his aggressive play.
Despite the heavy load, Oladipo has shown no signs of slowing down. He’s rejected the concept of the rookie-wall, and has improved dramatically during the third quarter of the season. He’s playing so well that he has forced his way into the rookie of the year discussion.
