2014 NBA Draft: Projecting the Orlando Magic's WoNK Pick

The “WoNK pick” is a term created by Orlando Pinstriped Post user longhaulforhunger and stands for “Worst of Nuggets/Knicks” draft pick. We will refer to it here because game recognizes game, and OPP came up with a great colloquial way to quickly refer to the Magic’s complicated draft pick compensation.

The Nuggets owe the Magic a first round draft pick this year as part of the Dwight Howard trade. The Magic will receive either the Nugget’s own pick or the New York Knicks’ pick from Denver, whichever is the less desirable.

If the season ended today, then the Magic would get Denver’s selection, slotted for the 12th pick overall. New York’s pick is currently 9th. Magic fans should be rooting for both teams to lose and lose big, but right now they are more focused on the Nuggets.

But the current lottery standings are a bit of an illusion. Even though the Nuggets have the better record, they have no chance of reaching the playoffs in the cutthroat Western Conference. The Knicks, however, are another story.

At 25-40, New York is currently the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference, a half game behind the Detroit Pistons for the 9th seed. The Atlanta Hawks are in the 8th seed with a 27-35 record, but are sinking quickly. If the Knicks make the playoffs as the 8th seed, their draft pick will rise to the 15th overall selection in the first round. Even though they would have a worse record than the Nuggets, their pick would be worse, and go to Orlando.

In this instance, both Denver and Orlando fans are aligned. Both would prefer that the Knicks miss the playoffs so they could each enjoy a higher draft pick. While the scenarios are complicated, at least they ave the dysfunction of the Knickerbockers to count on.
