Glen Davis Buyout Changed Orlando Magic Rotation in Unexpected Ways

When the Orlando Magic announced the Glen Davis buyout, we tried to predict how his departure might change the Orlando Magic rotation. The verdict? We were right. And we were wrong.

We predicted that Andrew Nicholson would be the biggest beneficiary of the available minutes, predicting him to average 20 minutes a game (a 5 minute increase over his season average). We thought Kyle O’Quinn and Moe Harkless would each see an increase in 8 minutes per game (to 22 and 29 minutes respectively). And finally we predicted Victor Oladipo to pick up five more minutes on his already serious load.

We couldn’t have been more wrong about Nicholson. He has fallen deeper into coach Jacque Vaughn’s doghouse and actually seen his minutes decrease. He’s gone from 15.8 minutes per game to 12.2. His offense continues to be wild and Vaughn clearly doesn’t trust his defense. The emergence of O’Quinn and the Dewayne Dedmon signing have sealed his fate on the bench.

We were spot on with Harkless and O’Quinn who both mildly exceeded our expectations. Harkless has earned 29.3 minutes per game in Davis’ absence and O’Quinn has gotten 21.4. Oladipo’s minutes have stayed consistent, which is probably the right move considering the already have toll of his first NBA season.
