As some put it, it was the team’s Super Bowl. Others compared it to Christmas eve, getting to open that one present, but not getting the real big and important ones quite yet. Tuesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery will have a profound impact on everyone involved.
For the Orlando Magic, it ended up being a mix of both. With two lottery picks on the way, one guaranteed to be in the top six, the Magic landed in interesting positions with both. With their pick, the Magic were awarded the fourth pick, one in which they could use on any of the top five prospects in the draft.
As for their second selection, they were awarded the 12th pick from the Denver Nuggets/New York Knicks. They acquired this pick via the Nuggets in the Dwight Howard blockbuster. The pick was awarded to them based on the less favorable of the two following the lottery.
With two picks in the lottery, and many attractive young pieces and more future picks, the Magic could be prime candidates to move up, especially if someone they are targeting were to fall. Many believe that the team will use one of their selections on a point guard to go along with last years pick Victor Oladipo. The team chose to try Oladipo at the unfamiliar point guard spot this year, but would not say if he will continue to play point or if he’ll move back to his more natural off guard spot. General manager Rob Hennigan and coach Jacque Vaughn both labeled Oladipo as a “guard” at the end of the season.
Nevertheless, Tuesday’s draft lottery proved to be important and quite possibly very impactful down the line for the Magic in their process of building a championship contender.
