Chicago Bulls Pursuing Arron Afflalo, According to Report

The rumors with Orlando Magic guard Arron Afflalo continue to swirl. On Saturday, Yahoo! Sport’s Adrian Wojnarwoski cited league sources as saying the Chicago Bulls were pursuing a trade for the Magic swingman. Afflalo, who has been the talk of many rumors over the last year, is coming off a career year, and with two years left on his deal, now might be the time for the team to look to move him.

Working on a deal with the Bulls makes sense for the Magic. Chicago has a handful of assets, including the 16th, 19th and 49th picks in this years draft. They also hold 2015 first rounders from the Sacramento Kings, top-10 protected through 2017, and the right to swap first round picks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but only if the pick falls outside of the lottery. They also have two second round picks, one in 2015 and one in 2016, from the Portland Trail Blazers.

Chicago also has a handful of interesting young players that they could include in a package for Afflalo. Swingmen Jimmy Butler and Tony Snell could entice the Magic, as could power forward Taj Gibson, who’s coming off arguably his best season yet. Chicago also has the rights to 23-year-old power forward Nikola Mirotic, who is currently one of the top players in Europe, and is expected to make the move to the NBA this season.

With Orlando holding a good bit of cap space this offseason, and it appearing unlikely they will go after a big name free agent, they could help the Bulls by taking back Carlos Boozer’s expiring contract. If the Magic were to do this, the Bulls may be more open to moving some of their more prized young assets.

A potential deal could make sense for both parties. As Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel outlines, the Magic have shown a willingness to part ways with players who are producing at high levels, if they feel they can’t re-sign that player. They would also add another pick in this year’s draft, plus a second rounder, which they currently do not have.

As for the Bulls, it would give them a lot of options going forward this summer. Yes, they lose a few of their assets, but they gain one in Afflalo, whom they could use in a bigger trade to potentially acquire Minnesota’s Kevin Love. This would also give the Bulls a potential chance to make a run at Carmelo Anthony in free agency.
