With the United States Mens Basketball Team gearing up for the FIBA World Cup in just over a month, a couple of Magic men have been invited to join the Select Team. Forward Tobias Harris, along with guard Victor Oladipo will be on the USA’s select team, which will work out and scrimmage against the players who could be making the trip to Spain. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news.
Two of the team’s most important pieces, the opportunity to play against some of the leagues best with some of the best coaching out there could be huge for both Harris and Oladipo. It’s a chance for both players to continue their development and learn more about their games and how they can continue to improve both on and off the floor.
While the members of the Select Team won’t be making the trip to Spain, it could prove to be very vital down the road. A solid showing could end up earning them an invite to camp with the senior team for the Summer Olympics in two years, or the FIBA World Cup when it’s back in 2019.
This upcoming season will be a big one for Harris, as he’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. The team will be able to extend the combo forward up until November 1st, and if a deal is not reached, Harris will hit restricted free agency on July 1st, 2015.
Oladipo on the other hand is going to be looking for this to help him build off of not only a strong rookie season, but a good showing in last weeks Orlando Summer League as well. He was asked to learn a new position last year — point guard — but with the acquisition of Elfrid Payton on draft night, Oladipo should be able to move back to his more comfortable shooting guard spot.
Camp will begin July 28th and run through August 1st in Las Vegas.
