Israel restores electricity to West Bank after power cuts

Israel on Monday announced it had stopped private imports of cement to the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave, accusing Imad Al Baz, deputy director of the economy ministry, of diverting supplies. Does that sound right? That means the number of deaths is far lower than even that 1,462 number.

On Tuesday, Nabil Abu Rdineh, an aide to President Abbas said in an official statement that the Israeli media reports are denied and totally untrue.

"To the degree that they want us to have a positive relationship, I think they're going to have to improve their relationship with the Palestinians", he said.

Sanders, the Independent senator from Vermont who is mounting a strong challenge against Hillary Clinton, the front-runner in the Democratic race, also said the Palestinians must condemn terrorism and recognize Israel as a Jewish state. "So yeah, I do believe, and I don't think I'm alone in believing, that Israel's force was more indiscriminate than it should have been", Sanders said.

Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza since 2006.

But the problem here, as with the entire "progressive" critique of Israel, is that Sanders' beliefs about the Gaza war are rooted in his misconceptions about the continuing cause of the conflict.

Sanders had criticism for the Palestinian side as well. And while he may regard Israel's need to take out these targets as optional, Israel's leaders had the responsibility to defend their people against truly indiscriminate attacks in the form of Hamas rockets and terror tunnels. "My understanding is that a whole lot of apartment houses were leveled".

Apropos of Sanders' hospital comment, according to eyewitness accounts from reporters broadcasting from Gaza in 2014, Hamas launched rockets from next to Gaza's main hospital, while the United Nations admitted Hamas had used its schools in Gaza to store rockets. Palestinian militants in Gaza and the Jewish state have fought three wars since 2008.

In the same publication at the end of last month, Abbas was quoted as telling a delegation of Jews: "We strive for peace through the establishment of the Palestinian state, which will live in peace and stability alongside Israel...We are experiencing hard days, and despite all that is happening, we still hold our hand out to you, in order to establish peace and put an end to the loathing and [spilling] of blood between us".

Earlier, the PA filed a petition in the High Court of Justice against the power cuts instigated by IEC, claiming that the latter was abusing its monopolistic power and that its actions would have grave consequences for the diplomatic situations and Israel's foreign relations.
