The goal there is to craft a document that reflects who we are as Republicans. Only around 30 of 112 amassed platform delegates were willing to vote in favor of Hoff's amendment, and fewer were in favor of removing a call for a Constitutional ban on same sex marriage from the party platform. Since then, the Supreme Court backed the right of same-sex couples to Wednesday. When a conservative delegate proposed inserting "traditional" before "two-parent families" in a section about what is best for children, a couple of delegates called it an extra slap in the face to LGBT people and an insult to single parents, but the amendment passed.
NY delegate Annie Dickerson said the GOP Platform Committee has been resisting an obvious trend in the country toward gay rights, calling same-sex marriage "settled law", saying it is only a matter of time before federal nondiscrimination statutes protecting LGBT rights are enacted.
Republican-leaning groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say Trump exaggerates the shortcomings of trade and ignores the many benefits, including new and different types of jobs Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton and aides note that many Trump businesses have benefited from free trade.
Rachel Hoff, the first openly gay delegate to serve on the panel, was near tears as she pled for support of an amendment that was neutral on same-sex marriage and stated that Republicans held a diversity of views on the issue.
She says it's a matter of laying out core values of the party that will attract a country she believes in center-right.
"I doubt that this platform will be much different from years past", she said. "If we're going to be competitive in blue states, then we need to address these issues", he said, citing presumptive presidential candidate Donald Trump's struggling poll numbers among young people.
Dickerson had labeled proposed language around same-sex marriage "blatant discrimination" in a floor speech. Initially, it seemed to welcome the quieter entreaty from Hoff to have the platform say only that the Republican Party welcomes "thoughtful conversation" about the meaning of marriage. "I have many friends, close friends who are LGBT and that we must reach out to". "I think in 20 years we'll look at this as an unfortunate blot in the history of the Republican Party that there wasn't an embrace for our brothers and sisters".
Polls show a majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, and allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, speaking with Fox News' Greta Van Susteren, even acknowledged that the wall amendment was a "hat tip" to Trump.
"The GOP platform, largely written by anti-LGBT crusader Tony Perkins, is culturally out of touch modern American reality", GOProud co-founder Jimmy LaSalvia told Rare.
