Authorities retrieve weapon from mall shooting

Streets surrounding the mall and access roads to entrances to the facility had been closed off by police.

Authorities told of the Cascade Mall shooter leaving before police arrived. He said it's unclear if one of them belongs to the gunman.

The community of 8,600 people is too far from Seattle to be a commuter town, but its population swells to 55,000 during the day because of a popular outlet mall, retail stores and other businesses.

The Washington State Patrol Saturday morning released photos of the suspect in the Cascade Mall shooting in Burlington Friday night that left five people dead in the Macy's Store.

The Associated Press reports that the shooting started around 7 the cosmetics department of the Macy's at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, which is about 65 miles north of Seattle.

A helicopter, search teams and K-9 units scoured the area around the mall for the suspect. One of the most shocking facts that has surfaced in the aftermath is that the man was seen entering the mall without a gun about 10 minutes before the shooting, according to a press conference on September where did the gun come from? Skagit County Coroner Hayley Thompson said the victims' identities will be released once autopsies are complete and next of kin have been notified. Authorities say the motive was unknown for the shooting about 60 miles (97 kilometers) north of Seattle.

FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael Knutson said at a press conference that they have "no indication that there was a terrorism act at this point in time". He was last seen after the shooting walking towards Interstate 5 from the mall.

It took hours for teams to search the 434,000-square-foot (40,000-square-meter) mall late Friday night.

He said Saturday that he saw people running and a woman told them to evacuate.

"Then I heard seven or eight more and I just stayed quiet in the dressing room, because it just didn't feel right", she said.

There is no information at this time about a suspect vehicle.

Maria Elena Vasquez attended a community gathering Saturday and said she was nervous about taking her 7-year-old daughter to her soccer game.

"But I don't think our way of life needs to change forever", Sexton told reporters. "It's too close to home".

"Our hearts are in Burlington", Governor Jay Inslee said on Twitter. We urge residents to heed all safety and detour warnings.
