However, the program's latest hire is actually a reunion as UConn has hired Randy Edsall as their new head football coach.
"Time has its way of healing scars", Mark Redman of Bristol said Wednesday afternoon in the lobby of the XL Center ahead of the men's basketball game against Houston.
"We are excited to welcome back Coach Edsall to the University of CT", university president Susan Herbst said in a statement. Edsall will also bring the reputation of being an actual, functioning adult, a quality that was missing in Diaco, leading to UConn football headlining some humiliating national sports coverage. And some fans, like Jerry Knecht, still aren't ready to forgive him.
"We've certainly been there before", Caldwell said.
Edsall addressed the controversy head-on in a prepared statement issued through the university. Edsall also managed to win a lot of games without a real quarterback, which will be helpful because UConn might not have one of those at the moment either. But with new players and a new administration, he didn't think lingering feelings over Edsall's departure would hamper his ability to coach. It is bringing back a familiar face, too.
"Winning cures a lot of things", said Tim Knecht, a fan from Bristol. My task today is to take the opposite tact and give you the glass half-full view on the move and what it means for the program going forward. Additionally, Edsall's former players had been essentially shut out of Diaco's program, with several openly voicing their displeasure. "They deserve to have fans who believe".
Edsall served as UConn's head coach from 1999 to 2010. Edsall went 3-2 in bowl games with CT with his last bowl win in the PapaJohns.com Bowl in 2010 over SC. He replaces Bob Diaco, who was sacked two days ago after just 11 wins in three seasons with the program. Maryland fired Edsall six games into the 2015 season. This was all possible after UConn fired Bob Diaco on Monday. The team was ranked near the bottom nationally in several offensive categories.
Randy Edsall is officially returning as UConn football coach. But Pasqualoni was sacked after just 28 games. So it wasn't clear who else would have expressed interest in the UConn coaching job.
Edsall returns to Storrs from tours of duty with the Detroit Lions and Maryland- the school he left UConn for after the Fiesta Bowl loss in 2010.
The Huskies likely weren't competing with very many other schools, as Edsall had been serving as the Detroit Lions' director of football research/special projects since his firing halfway through his last season at Maryland.
