Kaepernick Leads 49ers To Comeback Victory Over Rams

26 December 2016

Rams legend Eric Dickerson vowed to not attend another game as long as Jeff Fisher is head coach.

However, LA responded immediately.

Rookie Pharoh Cooper returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Rams 48-yard line. In that game, it was Carlos Hyde that came up big for San Francisco in the ground game after finding the end zone twice while recording 88 rushing yards on 23 carries.

The Rams, though, weren't done yet.

But something insane definitely happened over the final five minutes, as the 49ers inexplicably rallied for a rousing 22-21 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Christmas Eve.

Kaepernick completed passes for five, 12 and 11 yards on the first three plays.

Kenny Britt caught a 15-yard pass on the Rams' first possession to become the team's first receiver to amass over 1,000 yards since Torry Holt finished the 2007 season with 1,189 yards. There's of course a couple of plays that I want back, just kind of knocking the rust off, but once again, I do it for this team. Gurley should have a huge day and get much closer to his second straight 1,000 yard season. Linebacker Gerald Hodges walked off the field with an undisclosed injury. It was Goff's second of the day, and a microcosm of the offense's collective struggle to convert when it was most needed, be it on third down or on a drive late in the fourth quarter.

"It felt wonderful", said quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who led the incredible late-fourth-quarter charge".

The fourth quarter, though, offered a considerable uptick in excitement beyond counting punting records.

The 49ers coach called a run-pass option for his athletic signal-caller. The way we won it, it speaks volumes on our team, our character, the pride we play with. After Greg Zuerlein converted the extra point, LA led 21-7 and appeared on its way to a comfortable home victory. After the extra point, the 49ers only trailed 21-14 and suddenly, the Coliseum looked primed for an exciting finish.

San Francisco's season from hell will conclude next Sunday, when the Seattle Seahawks travel to Levi's Stadium. The No. 1 overall pick in last spring's NFL Draft now looks like a bust to most observers, although it is hardly fair to give him that label without a full offseason of preparation.

Kelly chose to go for the two-point conversion based on the time on the clock (31 seconds) and San Francisco's strong play against Rams rookie quarterback Jared Goff.

The Rams had not scored a first-quarter touchdown in their previous three games, and had just three touchdowns in the first quarter since Goff replaced Case Keenum as starting quarterback.

The 49ers (2-13) were without left tackle Joe Staley because of a hamstring injury and center Marcus Martin because of an ankle issue, and things got worse in the second quarter when rookie right guard Joshua Garnett exited with a finger injury.
