The midsize SUV's launch has been a long awaited one, ever since it was first revealed in Brazil late a year ago.
The company had invested $280 million on the project at its facility near Pune. The SUV, the first to be produced by FCA in India, is expected to enter the domestic auto market's fastest-growing segment in the third quarter of calendar 2017. We just hope Jeep has planned this model for Indian as well, as it will be exporting the same from the country!
The move to introduce a locally developed model in the country signals Fiat's renewed interest in the Indian market, where it has met with little success despite a long association. The made-in-India SUV will be shipped to the likes of UK, Australia, New Zealand among others.
The Jeep Compass gets a sharp and sculpted look. It gets an extra "Rock" mode (along with Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud) in Jeep's Selec-Terrain system along with Jeep Active Ride 4x4 Low for proper crawling while off-roading. While the CR-V has a niche with its petrol power, both the Tucson and XUV have turned out to be popular sellers for their respective manufacturers with potent diesel engines. However, Jeep designers and engineers at hand earlier this week at the company's Ranjangaon facility were quick to point out that the SUV will be big on utility, versatility, and optimising interior space. "We will export to global right-hand drive markets from India".
Jeep has finally unveiled its most anticipated offering in India, the Compass.
Sharma of IHS Markit said if it is priced between Rs 15 and Rs 20 lakh, the Compass will attract customers from the Rs 12-15 lakh segment of the Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta, Nissan Terrano, Tata Hexa, and also encourage buyers of BMW X1 and Audi Q3 to settle for a relatively newer badge like the Jeep.
India is the only location where the right-hand drive variant of the Compass will be manufactured.
The Compass will be offered in India with a 2-litre diesel engine making over 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque.
The Renegade is the smallest offering from Jeep and is offered in both, 4x2 and 4x4 setups in the global market. Both these engines comply with the latest BS-IV emissions and can be scaled up to meet BS-VI emissions as well. But the one to really stand out as an ideal for our conditions could be the Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) tech. Like rest of the Jeep Trailhawk models, the Compass Trailhawk is also the most extreme off-road version of the SUV. Safety has been given huge importance as well, as dual-front airbags (six airbags only in the 4x4 trim), ABS, EBD, Hill start assist and many other features are being offered as standard on the Compass.
