Microsoft introduces new Surface Laptop

03 May 2017

Microsoft is using the Surface Laptop to introduce Windows 10 S to the world.

Windows 10 S (not Windows Tennis) is a new variation of Windows that sort of works like macOS would if you could only install software from the Mac App Store. It is still a full version of Windows 10, just it is locked to only applications that can be downloaded from the Windows Store in a similar manner to how Apple and Google treat their respective stores.

"It's easy to setup and manage and will have the same performance on the first day of school, as the last", Myerson said at a launch event in NY. Also schools that have genuine copies of Windows 10 Pro installed will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 S and Office 365.

However, users can pay a one-time $49 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft's notebook wakes and sleeps instantly when opened and closed.

The Surface Laptop is up for pre-orders.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop features a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with edge-to-edge Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top. It weighs 2.76 pounds and has an impressive estimated battery life of 14.5 hours.

"It's simply gorgeous", Panay said. "In apparent conflict with the Surface Pro's "tablet that can replace your laptop" tagline, Microsoft has built a laptop that could end up replacing Surface Pros. "[Surface Laptop] is the most personal and balanced Surface we've ever made", said Microsoft.

The basic Surface Laptop variant comes with Intel® HD Graphics 620 and an Intel Core i5 Kaby Lake CPU. According to the news, we are not expecting to see a new Surface Book 2 or Surface Pro 5, instead the Microsoft is focusing on education.

The Surface Laptop will be available in four colours - burgundy, graphite gold, platinum, and cobalt blue.

The device has a touch screen, and can display 3.2 million pixels, like other Surface devices. It also is created to work with the Surface Dial and Surface Pen accessories from Microsoft's Surface desktop and tablets.

Earlier on Tuesday Microsoft announced Windows 10 S, the long-awaited education-focused operating system that'll take on Google's Chrome OS for control of the classroom.

Surface Laptop was aimed at college students and evidently meant to set a performance bar for partners, some of which will be coming to market with lower priced computers powered by Windows 10 S to entice students at all grade levels. There's a seventh-generation Intel Core processor, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. Interestingly, the leaked slides suggested these would be both slower to boot and to log into than Chromebooks.

For school IT administrators, Microsoft showed off how teachers can set up customized Windows 10 S devices in 30 seconds with the company's Set Up School PC app and a USB stick. The new OS only permits users to run apps obtained through Microsoft's online Windows Store, which the company says makes the devices more secure and easier to manage.
