Congressman's condition 'more difficult' than first thought

Scalise suffered a trans pelvic gunshot wound, Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma, told the press Friday.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.

Mr Scalise, a police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist were wounded on Wednesday when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire on the lawmakers as they practiced for an annual charity baseball game between Republicans and Democrats.

Scalise was shot in the hip and taken to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday, where he underwent his first surgery after the attack. The doctor said Scalise was in shock and near death because of extensive blood loss when he arrived at the hospital by helicopter Wednesday.

More on this as it develops. His family said in a statement he was showing "positive results" and was expected to make a full recovery.

Top Republican politician Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after he was gunned down at a party baseball practice outside Washington.

"He's in some trouble", Trump said during a jobs event at the White House, calling Scalise a "great fighter" and "he's going to be OK, I hope". The hospital also said it will continue to provide periodical updates. Lawmakers called for a new dialogue on lowering the partisan temperature, and Trump urged Americans to come together as he assumed the role of national unifier for one of the first times in his presidency. Yet, his status remains critical and he requires additional operations. Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C.

Two other people injured in Wednesday's attack in Alexandria, Va., remain hospitalized. He was shot in the hip but the bullet tore through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

Liberal groups resistant to Republican policies say they have no plans to change their tactics or approach after a gunman apparently driven by his hatred of President Donald Trump opened fire at a GOP baseball practice. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.

It also said that the Nationals, the major league team that plays at the park, has released additional seating for Thursday night's game. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.
