Several of the actors spoke with appreciation of the show's reception - "This Is Us" is the first broadcast series to earn an Emmy nomination in the cable-heavy best drama category since 2011.
"But it's also fair to say that we are going to be putting forth some new questions that are going to start getting asked after that, and that particularly involves Jack's fate".
Well? "It's a hard question because if we say everything there's nothing left to watch", says Fogelman.
In the present-day stories, the season 2 premiere will pick up the action with the Big Three - Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) celebrating their collective 37th birthday.(The season 1 premiere took place on their 36th birthday.) Are they together on the big day?
Speaking of Kevin's film, which Ron Howard is producing in the show, Sylvester Stallone will appear in a guest arc, said Fogelman. "And we have not strayed from the plan", he added. Good, because we all know Randall needs him. "He pushed a stranger on me, and that stranger became my child and that child became my life".
Though the first season gave fans a look into Jack's life with wife Rebecca (Mandy Moore), it never fully explained how he died or what came of that bad fight shown in the last episode.
Critics were also treated to a sneak peek from the Season 2 premiere which shows Randall and Rebecca in the present day.
"There was nothing to decide", Rebecca insists, but Randall presses her, pointing out that she'd just lost a baby and that he's well aware that Jack and Rebecca's marriage wasn't ideal. In the scene, which takes place in the present, the now-older Rebecca is telling Randall how she and Jack chose to adopt Randall in the hospital, when he was a newborn baby.
The scene then flashes back to the hospital right after the kids were born, with Jack wheeling Rebecca up to the observation window to look at baby Randall. Though the character has been polarizing to some viewers, who don't want to see Jack replaced in the family, Fogelman notes that Huertas i "such a likable actor" that he plans to explore more of the character, and hopefully he will come to grow on the audience.
Ventimiglia was without his trademark facial hair at the press tour, instead rocking a clean-shaven look, which he later confirmed to ET was due to him now filming young Jack scenes. Can't you just feel it? Jack encourages her. But we find out that Rebecca initially said no. "Mandy and I, we just want those happy moments because they're fun to play. Sometimes in marriage, someone has to be the one to push, to make the big moves, and oftentimes in our marriage, yes, it was your father", she tells Randall. Your father wasn't flawless either, but he was pretty damn close; as close as they come.
"I was exhausted and grieving", Rebecca tells Randall in the clip.
