Cooper said. "It is going to be a blast!"

"As a mother, a wife, and a human being, that photo is very disturbing", Melania Trump said in a statement to NBC News at the time.

Cohen replaces comedian Kathy Griffin, the previous co-host, who was dismissed by CNN last spring after posting a video of herself holding a mask styled to look like the severed head of President Donald Trump.

Said Cohen, "I've been friends with Anderson for twenty-five years".

She took a knee and raised a fist, a nod to the National Football League protests that Trump and Pence have both denounced, and then spiked the mask, to uproarious applause. "We've travelled the world together and performed in 30 plus cities with "AC2" and it's all led to this one huge night!"

Prior to the photo shoot, Cooper and Griffin had hosted the New Year's Eve special together for nine years, beginning in 2007.

The pair have been friends for decades, performing in standup/discussion shows across the globe.

Cohen also has a long-standing relationship with Griffin from his time as a network executive at Bravo.

Cohen tweeted after the announcement that he "could not be more excited". "New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen" on Sunday, December 31st.

Per the comedian, she and Cooper ended their personal friendship after the newsman didn't come to her defense following the fallout.
