Joel Embiid, 76ers Agree to Five-Year, $148M Deal

The Sixers are believed to have included several protections in the deal if Embiid continues to struggle with injuries over the next five years.

The Sixers and Embiid had until October 16 to agree to an extension; otherwise, Embiid would have become a restricted free agent following the season. Yes, Embiid was probably going to miss his rookie season while recovering from a foot injury. Embiid has only played in 31 games, all of which had a minute restriction. He had denied whispers that he had been slow to return because he was waiting until the contract extension.

Despite the limited sample size from which to choose from, Embiid's game alone indicates that he is worth that kind of money.

It's not like there was a long line of suitors for restricted free agent big men this past summer. There's no leverage. They can do whatever they want. "If it happens, it happens". The other three players did not receive the maximum allotted salary as Embiid did. He also grabbed almost eight rebounds in 25.4 minutes per contest, averaged 2.5 blocks, and shot 36.7 percent from three, stretching defenses with his range, driving to the hole at will, and getting to the line, averaging almost eight free throw attempts per game last season. He was equally effective as a three-point shooter and a defensive stopper.

Adrian Wojnarowski indicates Embiid has contract incentives based on whether he makes All-NBA teams or wins the Most Valuable Player award. He's slated to make $6,100,266 in year four. Steph Curry, the league's highest-paid player will earn $34.7 million this season.

Embiid will continue to have restrictions on his playing time coming into the 2017-18 season, which is set to begin for the 76ers on October 18 against the Washington Wizards. Eventually, Philadelphia will have to do the same with Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz, so getting the Embiid extension out of the way now figures to prove vital for the future.

Before training camp, however, Embiid said, "to be honest, I don't think I'll play all 82 games".

76ers coach Brett Brown, without commenting on the contract's specifics, ?told media before Monday's preseason game at? He's a beast. I can't name one person that can stop him.

While Embiid's presence on the floor made the Sixers a drastically better team, it was his youthful and charismatic spirit that made him such a joy to watch.

Jessica Camerato of NBC Sports Philadelphia confirmed Wojnarowski's report. "He has a chance to be great". "There's still a lot of work to be done".

Heading into this campaign, the 23-year-old's health is still a concern as he's yet to play in a pre-season game and is doubtful to play in their opening night encounter against the Washington Wizards next week. All along, however, Colangelo has been "cautiously optimistic" that it would happen. Team-building is a process. "We have all enjoyed watching the hard work he puts into his game and the commitment he has for our organization. What happened in the past is in the past and we are looking forward to a positive season".

Embiid, a native of Cameroon, appreciates that the 76ers were always supportive as he dealt with the injury troubles before finally making it on the court last season.

"I'm so thrilled to be in this position", Embiid said. It was probably the most love I've got in the city yet. I can do this.
