No. 13 Miami's late TD beats Florida State

He was one of the best punt returners in the ACC, but was aching to use his sure hands and speed to help Miami's offense. But FSU is eighth in the ACC and tied for 47th in the nation in scoring defense (allowing 23.5 points per game) and are not making almost enough big plays: the 'Noles are tied for 123rd in the nation in forcing only three turnovers and are tied for 66th in the nation with an average of 2.0 sacks per game.

The loss marked Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher's first defeat against Miami since he took over the program in 2010.

"In the first half things were working ... things were rolling", said defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi. "But you play good teams, that happens".

His recent consistency has been well timed, with the Seminoles struggling to turn promising drives into touchdowns early in their 2017 campaign. This became a common routine in the first half, with Florida State earning it's only points of the first half off a 31-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Ricky Aguayo.

Nobody who watched the first three quarters could have envisioned an ending like this.

Half of their six possessions were three-and-outs.

On first offensive play of the second half for FSU, highly scrutinized UM cornerback Dee Delaney intercepts Blackman. Most coaches in the country would have played the same end of game scenario conservatively to send the game to overtime, but Richt took his chances on the road and allowed Malik Rosier one last downfield throw with under 10 seconds remaining. As a result, this will go down as one the more memorable games is the Miami-Florida State rivalry.

The latest chapter of that legacy was written during FSU's 24-20 loss to No. 13 Miami Saturday.

"We're very disappointed. We feel like we should've won the game", said Seminoles linebacker Matthew Thomas, who is a native of Miami. It was a contest where FSU football - a team who on paper seems to be in real danger of not being bowl eligible - had the lead late in the fourth quarter against the No. 13 ranked team in the country, showing they have the ability to play well.

Rosier and FSU quarterback James Blackman dueled in the fourth quarter in classic fashion.

Miami broke their seven year losing skid to the Seminoles. On third-and-10 at the 34-yard line, facing the possibility of a long field goal, Rosier completed an 11-yard pass to Berrios to move the chains. "We work on it every week", Rosier said. Going into Week 4, they had each played just one game, with precious little information to evaluate them by.

Barrios had a career day.

LOS ANGELES - Sam Darnold threw for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns, Ronald Jones II rushed for 1 touchdown and No. 14 Southern California (5-1, 3-1) defeated Oregon State (1-5, 0-3) on Saturday.

Hill also threw a 45-yard touchdown pass and was on the receiving end of a 48-yard score for the Frogs (5-0, 2-0). Blackman hit Auden Tate for a touchdown pass with 1:24 remaining. But two of his three completions came on third down.

The win snaps Miami's seven-game losing streak vs. Florida State and drops the preseason top-five Seminoles to 1-3.

After their thrilling 24-20 come-from-behind victory Saturday in Tallahassee, the Canes (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) rose to No. 11 Sunday in the Associated Press Poll and No. 10 in the Amway Coaches Poll.
