Reminder to get screened during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To reduce their risk of developing the disease, many women with high-risk breast cancer genes choose to have breast removal surgery. "That's the difference between mastectomy, lumpectomy, the difference between chemotherapy or no chemotherapy". Developed by researchers, including those from University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, the test looks at 18 genetic variants, in the blood or saliva, known to affect the chances of getting breast cancer.

All of the women had early breast cancer, meaning the tumors had not spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes.

"It worries many women I think", said Missoula resident Camill Severti. Survival odds are generally much better for women diagnosed with these early-stage tumors than for patients with tumors that have metastasized, or spread to other organs in the body.

"If we can target certain pro-cancer bacteria, we may be able to make the environment less cancer-friendly and improve existing treatments.Larger studies are needed but this work is a solid first step in understanding the important role of bacterial imbalances in breast cancer, "Grobymer said". To examine how employment experiences are impacted by different types of breast cancer treatment, Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, of the University of MI, and her colleagues surveyed women aged 20 to 79 years diagnosed with stages 0-II breast cancer as reported to the Georgia and Los Angeles SEER registries in 2014 and 2015. Most (84 percent) worked full time before diagnosis. According to statistics of World Health Organization, more than 60% of the women are diagnosed with breast cancer at stage III or IV in India. It is the time to inform people about it and to educate them and tell them about its effects, prevention and treatment methods.

Talk to your doctor about what factors are increasing your risk for developing a breast cancer. All treatments are individualized for what that particular patient needs.
