John Conyers will leave Congress in wake of harassment claims

Conyers, 88, has denied the allegations, saying today that "they are not accurate, they are not true", but amid an inquiry by the House Ethics Committee following revelations of a settlement two years ago for wrongful dismissal of a female former employee, Conyers is stepping down. "I think we have to recognize and be able to hold the dueling possibilities that somebody can be a great man and have done great things for our country and for civil rights but also have done awful things that require accountability".

Just late last night, another woman who says she worked for Conyers also came forward to say the congressman groped her while they were in church.

The announcement is expected to be made at 10:15AM Tuesday on the "The Mildred Gaddis Show" on 102.7FM in Detroit.

As the furor grew, he stepped down as the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and the Ethics Committee began investigating him.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., a longtime co-chairman of the House Progressive Caucus, said that the Conyers-backed left-wing bills - which had no chance of passage in this Congress - would be adopted by other members.

As allegations of sexual misconduct continue to swirl around him, several of Conyers' congressional colleagues encouraged him to resign.

The law is similar to New York's.

MI state Sen. Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, told The New York Times for a story Tuesday that he plans to run for the 13th District congressional seat. Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-NV) to resign after BuzzFeed reported that, as a candidate, Kihuen allegedly sexually harassed his campaign finance director.

"I'm now in Israel on a fact finding mission with African American leaders from the Midwest", he wrote on Twitter.

Messages left with Ian Conyers seeking further comment were not immediately returned.

The lawmaker was abandoned by party leadership when the seriousness of the allegations against him became apparent, and as Congress grapples with how to address the issue of sexual misconduct. Under a system created more than 20 years ago, victims must undergo counseling and mediation in order to pursue legal action against members who mistreat them.

Conyers settled a sexual harassment complaint in 2015 out of his own budget, disguising the payments as severance. "Systemic change is urgently needed so no other women have to endure the retaliation, secrecy and delays my client Marion Brown and others experienced".

"He asked me to satisfy him sexually", Brown told NBC. As you know his health is not the best. "It was sexual harassment, violating my body, propositioning me for sex".
