If you had lost hope that Facebook will ever be introducing a downvote button, there is a surprise for you.

Facebook has often acknowledged its complicity with active steps taken to ensure that the spread of fake news - a contributing factor in swaying the 2016 United States presidential election - and cyber bullying will not be tolerated. The button is being tested by a small number of USA users only.

Facebook is trialling a new comments interaction called "downvote" which will allow users to provide negative feedback on the social media platform. Instead, it's testing a button that lets people express their dislike for comments. The screenshots come from Christina Hudler. However, the feature is available on any comment that is made on a public page post. According to Facebook, the test is limited to five percent of the company's English-speaking Android users in the U.S., a typical audience test for a new Facebook feature.

Facebook is testing an experimental "downvote" button as the social media giant continues its efforts to clean up its platform and reputation.

A downvote button sure sounds like a dislike button, which people have been wanting for years and they clarified that with a statement.

For now, Facebook has confirmed that a Downvote button is being tested and its objective is to give feedback about comments. "That doesn't seem like the kind of community we want to create", said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Q&A session in 2015. That Facebook wants to make clear.

Facebook appears to testing a new "downvote" button for comments. Downvoting was popularized on Reddit for crowdsourcedcomment ranking.

But websites like Reddit and Voat - which already use voting systems - have shown that people typically use downvote buttons to show when they simply dislike or disagree with a piece of content.

The new button was first noticed by Taylor Lorenz of The Daily Beast.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Moreover, a commenter would not know if his or her comment has been downvoted.

"We're doing this by encouraging meaningful connections between people rather than passive consumption of content", Zuckerberg said.
