Stephen Hawking's death lights up the Twitterverse

Hawking was a hero for geeks and the mainstream alike - he was featured in shows like The Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons and his life story was portrayed by Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar for his role, in The Theory of Everything. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at.

American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted: "His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake".

"Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure". Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018.

Stephen Hawking spent most of his adult life on a wheelchair after a rare slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) gradually paralysed him decades ago. However, this led to the development of the appropriately titled speech-generating device that is closely associated with Hawking. "No one created the universe and no one directs our fate", Hawking had stated. I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.

"We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible", he said last summer.

Professor Hawking, who became renowned for his sense of humour, also performed cameos in the United States comedy series The Big Bang Theory as well as The Simpsons and Star Trek.

Hawking had also supported the Palestinian cause and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.

"If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed", he said in 2015 in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session.

Alana Neimanis in London, posted a video of her eight-year-old son Samuel reacting to the news of Professor Hawking's death.

Upon his death yesterday, at age 76, Hawking was confined to a wheel chair, wrote books and academic papers by the excruciatingly faffy method of selecting letters with a twitch of his eye - most other bodily functions having failed him long ago. His theories unlocked a universe of possibilities that we & the world are exploring. "But it would be an empty universe indeed without the people that I love".

This is just a hint of what Hawking brought to the sciences.

"Beloved" Hawking, as described by his sons, was an outspoken commentator on life back on earth, voicing his disapproval in recent years of both the election of Donald Trump in the United States and Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

On an imperfect world: "Without imperfection, you or I would not exist" - In Into The Universe With Stephen Hawking, The Discovery Channel, 2010.
