The report came that the former PDP chairman was set to join the ruling party on Thursday.
It was reliably gathered that Sheriff and Lawan recently met President Muhammadu Buhari after which he directed the leadership of the APC to accord special recognition to Sheriff and accept him into the party.
Sheriff who has not been in good terms with the National Leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to have the support of the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie Oyegun in his bid to return to APC.
Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who past year lost the post of the National Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a long battle that was finally settled at the Supreme Court, will rejoin the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) this afternoon.
"We are aware of the well articulated plan and we are ready to defend any attempt towards destroying our party at the ward level and in any state - not just Borno".
Daily Trust had quoted the APC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, of saying, "The information I heard is that it will be tomorrow (Thursday) at 12pm".
"We are happy to welcome new members to our party, but membership cards are not issued at the Party National Secretariat".
Receiving the defectors at the PDP Secretariat in Yenagoa, the state Governor Seriake Dickson said their decision to rejoin their former political family was a welcome development.
He said, "Yes, we have moved to the APC; I and former Governor Sheriff have left the PDP for the APC and there are reasons".
The Police yesterday averted what would have been a bloody clash between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Prof Congress (APC) in Benin. You are welcome back home to your party.
You have renounced your membership of the PDP, now you are free to go to your ears where registration is going on and participate.
Conspicuously missing, however, was the leader of the faction, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who was said to have travelled out of the country.
He also said that their entrance into APC would change the narrative for the better and in the interest of their people.
"We have taken the biggest faction of the PDP and I can say it is our luck that we are taking a better part of the PDP today (yesterday)". "Today is a historic day because we have received a great faction".
Reacting, Dolori said, "I want to assure you that the news remains a rumour, because somebody is only trying to fly a kite that is capable of causing confusion during the state congress".
"We ask for only one thing, the enabling environment and equal participation which you had graciously approved", Mr. Uzodinma said.
