Alan Shearer reacts to Mike Ashley's end of season statement at Newcastle

I have a contract with Newcastle, I'm talking to them about my renewal.

Newcastle, who were nearly on the verge of getting dragged into the relegation scrap, made an extraordinary comeback in the second half of the campaign, which has helped them finish in a respectable mid-table position. That means having the right quality, the right mentality and the right level through the whole season, not just for some performances.

What do you make of the Chelsea players antics today?

It is bad enough during the football season but now the matches have finished, we know for sure that the media will be ramping things up when it comes to transfer stories.

Benitez looked to land Abraham last summer, but he opted for Swansea - however, Chelsea are now keen for both players to go out on loan again - and Newcastle are set to get first option on both players. Give him some money to spend! "If he can do that with that squad, can you imagine what he'd do with some backing and some finance?"

Two years ago, Benitez admitted that the support of the St James' Park faithful played a major role in his decision not to walk away in the wake of relegation.

"I was really proud of that, but you can not sing the name of the manager if the team is doing badly", he said. They certainly did not look like a team who won a title just this time past year, with their fiery new Italian manager.

In a statement issued a little more than two hours after the final whistle, the sportswear tycoon said: "I would like to thank Rafa Benitez for his magnificent achievement this season".

"And the fans, the atmosphere here is togetherness, the relationship, the players they care, the manager, the staff, working together trying to achieve what we want to achieve".

Ashley is one of the more unpopular owners in the Premier League and Newcastle legend Shearer has dismissed the Magpies' owner's promise to back manager Rafa Benitez with transfer funds this summer.
