California governor slams Trump for 'lying' about immigration at 'sanctuary city' roundtable

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described some migrants as "animals", in a charged discussion about the border wall and law enforcement.

Melendez, of Lake Elsinore, said Trump is an "inspiration to a lot of people" and assured him that more Californians than expected support his plan to stop illegal immigration. He referred to some who cross the border illegally as "animals", not people.

"Each of you has bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state law", Trump told them. His dehumanizing comments about immigrants weren't new, nor was his attack on a Democratic politician. This empowered people to discriminate against or even physically harm them. She made national headlines in February when she warned residents on television before a targeted operation that she heard there would be arrests in the area by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Generalizations and stereotypes led many citizens of those countries to view entire ethnic groups of people so negatively that respecting their livelihood was of little priority. As for Libby Schaaf, I have no idea if what she did was illegal but it was certainly revealing of the attitude toward federal law enforcement on this issue.

Trump said he wanted people to come into the United States legally and on merit basis. He also famously launched his presidential campaign with a speech in which he said Mexico was sending "rapists", criminals and drug dealers across the border.

Sessions did not react, according to a report from the room.

The commander-in-chief, who has never really shied away from insulting immigrants, was having a roundtable discussion with a group of California sheriffs when he made the deeply disturbing remarks conflating immigration with delinquency - because according to the current administration, everyone who entered the USA illegally is criminal, regardless of the large possibility they could have done it to flee violence and war in their home countries.

"I mean, you talk about obstruction of justice; I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff".

The event came as top House Republicans worked to head off an attempt by party moderates to force roll calls on four immigration bills.

Steinle, a young San Francisco-area woman, was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant felon while walking on a pier with her father. A description of the exchange on C-SPAN, the cable channel that carries live political broadcasts, clearly says Trump was referring to "MS-13 gang members".

On Tuesday Hanford city council members voted unanimously to part ways from California's sanctuary law.

Jerry Brown took to Twitter to call out the president's lies on immigration. "I can't get the Democrats ― and nobody has been able to for years ― to approve common-sense measures that, when we catch these animal killers, we can lock them up and throw away the keys".
