Diseases From Ticks, Mosquitoes More Than Triple

Officials say the actual number of people who have become sick is much higher, in part because many infections are not reported or recognized.

Nine new germs spread by mosquitoes and ticks were discovered in the US, according to the CDC study, and the chances of mosquitoes bringing one of those germs to Houston's population can't be ruled out.

The increase in diseases caused by the bite of an infected flea, mosquito, or tick in the United States is likely the result of many factors.

Another mosquito may carry the Zika virus, but more research is needed to confirm the early lab tests, University of Florida scientists reported. The most common type of biting ticks in IL are the American dog tick and the lone star tick. "And we don't know what will threaten Americans next", Redfield said.

The third goal outlined by the senator is to create a reliable method of testing for Lyme disease, as the current method is not completely accurate, producing false positives and false negatives at an "unacceptable" rate.

"In some ways, what you should be concerned about when you're out and about is the tick, not necessarily the disease, so there are a lot of precautionary measures that people can take", he said. At its height, Illinois led the nation in the disease in 2002 with 884 diagnoses and 67 deaths, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Unlike tick-borne diseases, which are not infectious, mosquito-borne diseases are. The CDC has identified seven new germs transmitted by ticks. These diseases are spread as mosquitoes expand into new territory and are brought home by travelers. In addition, the CDC analyzed data which showed the United States lacks preparedness for confronting such disease spread, given the widespread and hard to control nature of the disease from these insects.

"Vector-borne diseases are fueled by changes in the ecology of microbial pathogen, reservoir hosts, local and global climate change as well as changes in human host susceptibility or travel patterns", Sullivan said. The data 'substantially underestimate disease occurrence, ' the report said.

"This is one place we don't want to be number one", Schumer said.
