New York AG Resigns Hours After Explosive Assault Allegations

"In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me", Schneiderman said in a statement. He denied the substance of the charges but said they would prevent him from effectively doing his work.

Schneiderman says he'll resign at the close of business Tuesday.

Manning Barish and Selvaratnam said that Schneiderman had hit and choked them, and told the magazine that the assaults occurred "often after drinking, frequently in bed and never with their consent".

The New York State attorney general resigned his post Monday after the New Yorker published detailed accounts by four women accusing him of sexual assault. He filed a lawsuit earlier this year against the company run by the former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein for gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle tore into Donald Trump Jr. and Kellyanne Conway today for taking victory laps on Twitter over the news that a prominent critic of President Trump met his downfall last night. Schneiderman's resignation came hours after the claims were published.

Those at Planned Parenthood add they are closely watching the legislative process being done in the building behind me, saying they hope whoever is picked to replace Schneiderman will be a champion for women's rights.

The 2013 tweet has now been unearthed to suggest that Trump, a fellow New Yorker who has also been accused of sexual misconduct, may have known something was going on in Schneiderman's personal life.

" I am honoured to serve the people of NY as acting Attorney General". I have not assaulted anyone. Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance has opened an investigation into the accusations. "They should have the opportunity to tell a district attorney the facts and circumstances", he said.

Around 9pm, Gov. Andrew Cuomo asked for Schneiderman's resignation.

Following his resignation, Schneiderman's interim replacement will be State Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, according to the Associated Press.

Healey worked with Schneiderman on cases involving ExxonMobil and climate change, as well as federal lawsuits over Volkswagon fraud allegations, the addition of a U.S. citizenship question to the Census and the Federal Communications Commissions over a vote to roll back net neutrality protections.

The magazine talked to a fourth woman who accused Schneiderman but did not want to be identified in the article.

Posting a message in which Schneiderman said "no one is above the law", Conway and President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Jr., both appeared to comment on the allegations.
