Apple releases the first public beta of iOS 12

Apple releases the first public beta of iOS 12

If you want to install the beta software, you'll have to register your device with Apple. Here's how to do it.

Formally unveiled earlier this month at a software-centric Worldwide Developers Conference, iOS 12 will obviously only be generally released to the public in the fall.

In all honesty, iOS 12 beta 1 was extremely stable, so we expect this to be a seamless and impressive development period ahead of September release. So, unless you're also testing beta versions off apps, you won't see much. The iOS 12 public beta is compatible with iOS devices running on iPhone 5s and later models. Since Apple TV purchases and data are stored in the cloud, there's no need to back up your Apple TV.

Again though, it's a beta, and you should proceed with caution. We strongly recommend installing on a secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac. You can get out of the beta at any point by unenrolling from the "Profiles" menu in your Preferences. It should help you get through the process problem-free.

Announced on June 4, iOS 12 mostly focuses on performance-related improvements, although some new features were also introduced.

A new type of customizable Animoji-like characters called Memoji, which can be edited and tweaked to a user's preferences and style. If you run into a major issue, you can always restore your device to iOS 11.

There are also four new emojis - T. Rex, koala, tiger and ghost - for your expressive needs.

First things first, be sure to do a fresh backup (Settings Device Backup) just in case anything goes awry. If you use iCloud for backups, you still need a PC with iTunes on it to downgrade your software.

With iOS 12, Apple is also trying to address tech addiction. My iPhone 7 is boring through its battery faster than usual, although that seems to have settle down a little in the last few days.

Users could then download the update for installation by following from "Settings" towards "General" and then the "Software update" option.
