Robbie Williams helps kick off World Cup

The opening ceremony of FIFA World Cup 2018 saw the cheekiest moments when British popstar did the unthinkable.

As Williams and Garifullina continued to warble through the former's back catalogue, we were also treated to an array of gymnastic tumbling and people twirling about in shiny costumes.

After weeks anxiously waiting for the tournament to kick-off in Russian Federation, football fans have got their wish, with Robbie Williams and Vladimir Putin leading the way at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. A total of 32 national teams will go against each other between June 14 and July 15 to clinch the FIFA World Cup trophy.

Nigera begin their conquest of Group D on Saturday against the 20th ranked Croatia.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the FIFA World Cup open after a colourful opening ceremony at the 81,000-seater Luzhniki Stadium.

In the past, Kraft has said the World Cup exemplifies the greatness of athletic competition, specifically the way it brings together all nationalities and backgrounds.

The 30-year-old Russian soprano, who rose to fame after she won the 2013 Operalia competition, performed with Robbie on his hit song Angeles. "I've done a lot in my career, and opening the FIFA World Cup to 80,000 football fans in the stadium and many millions all over the world is a boyhood dream", says Robbie Williams.

Meanwhile back on the pitch, the opening match saw home nation Russian Federation take on Saudi Arabia.

Hollywood actor Will Smith and American singer and songwriter Nicky Jam also performed their official song "Live It Up" along with 500 dancers and gymnasts at the event.

The showpiece event will begin with hosts Russian Federation crossing swords with Saudi Arabia in the Group A in the opening match.

Robbie Williams marred what had been a vintage performance of his greatest hits during the World Cup's opening ceremony by signing off with an obscene hand gesture. After it was announced that he would headline the Opening Ceremony, the British superstar faced some backlash from his own country.
