Sen. Collins: Separating Children and Parents 'Contrary to Our Values'

Because the government is charging the parents in the criminal justice system, children are separated from them, without a clear procedure for their reunification aside from hotlines the parents can call to try to track their children down.

Melania Trump released a statement on June 17 expressing her heartbreak over the desperate crisis created by little children being separated from their parents at the southern border under orders from the Trump administration.

The president has accused Democrats of promulgating "laws" that have caused family separation at the border - though there are no laws mandating that children be taken away from any adult arriving at the border. "And so he went to a zero tolerance policy", Bannon said.

The new figures are for people who tried to enter the USA between official border crossings.

"Congress passed the law that it is a crime to enter this country illegally. This is your policy", Democratic U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries said in New Jersey. He has falsely claimed that Democrats are responsible for the practice.

The number represents a dramatic uptick from the almost 1,800 family separations that Reuters reported had happened from October 2016 through February of this year.

"I'd like to say it's un-American, but it's happening right now in America".

"As a mother, as a Catholic, as somebody who has got a conscience".

Sessions has repeatedly touted the policy and it's necessity in appearance around the country and in interviews.

The prospect of children being torn from their parents' arms wasn't an unintended effect of this policy, it was central to its intention. "That's the Democrats" law, ' Trump told reporters on Friday.

"I hate the children being taken away", Trump said Friday morning. The Democrats forced that law upon our nation'.

Miller pushed the policy to fruition after March's increase in illegal immigration, which Trump touted as a top priority in his 2016 campaign.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials say four people were pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday, while a fifth person died in hospital.

"The president fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill", Shah said, referring to the GOP compromise bill as well as another, more conservative, DACA fix from Republican House leaders that is expected to fail, according to Politico.

Republican lawmakers also have registered frustration with the recent detentions, with some, such as Sen.

An anonymous White House official told The Washington Post this week that Trump is hoping to use the harsh policy as leverage to force Democrats to cave to his other immigration demands, like funding a border wall and lessening the amount of people allowed to immigrate to the US legally.

"Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform", said Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Trump.

From 19 April to 31 May, a total of 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults as they tried to enter the United States between official border crossings.

Women in immigrant detention are recounting the last time they saw their children, which was weeks, oftentimes months ago.
