Trump stokes Britain's Brexit turmoil at start of visit

But as President Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday, he will find plenty of people who think it is more important to oppose him than it is to nurture U.S. -U.K. ties.

Mass protests are expected to greet Donald Trump as he arrives for his first visit to Britain as president.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who signed off on the so-called "baby Trump" blimp, defended the decision Thursday, arguing the protests were not anti-American but emblematic of free speech.

The two leaders will hold talks the following day at Chequers, the 16th-century manor house which is the prime minister's official country residence which will focus on Russian Federation, trade, Brexit and Middle East.

Organizers of anti-Trump rallies say they are not expecting any trouble at all - and that it would be very unlikely for any hostility to be directed at ordinary Americans.

The U.S. Embassy has even warned American citizens to keep a low profile during the visit because of the planned protests - the sort of warning usually issued in more volatile locations.

Referring to the separation of undocumented parents and children, they wrote: "It is with great sadness that we have followed reports of events in recent months which have seen families ripped apart and children placed in cages. I think they agree with me on immigration", Trump said.

The tight security surrounding the visit will attempt to avoid exposing Trump to planned protests in central London.

"Tomorrow we have some large protests in central London and as the president of the United States makes his way through the country it is the Metropolitan Police who are responsible for his protection and security".

Earlier this week, Trump said it was "up to the people" whether the prime minister stayed on after two senior Cabinet ministers resigned within hours over her Brexit policy.

Many Britons are opposed to Trump's trip which is not the full state visit he was originally promised with the pomp and ceremony that entails.

They are scheduled to spend Thursday night at the US Ambassador's home Winfield House, which is in Regent's Park.

In a bid to steer clear of the protests, the USA president's itinerary largely avoids the capital - and any other large cities in the United Kingdom - with much of his trip being conducted in private estates or palaces.

The US President arrives after giving North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders a tongue-lashing in Brussels over defence spending and controversial comments about Britain being in "turmoil".

He said the stunt aims to "hold up a mirror" to Mr Trump's "toddler-like politics".

10 Downing Street said she would be meeting with schoolchildren and veterans on Friday, accompanied by Philip May, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's husband.

Donald Trump and wife Melania have been pictured dressed up to the nines at a lavish dinner at Blenheim Palace, hosted by Theresa May.

Donald Trump's son Eric has arrived in Scotland ahead of his father's visit to the UK.

The president is then set to take tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle, before heading to Scotland and the rolling green landscape of his golf course.

Eric Trump is playing golf at the Trump International Golf Links at Menie, Aberdeenshire, and also plans to visit Trump Turnberry, near Girvan, South Ayrshire.
