Johnny Depp's new movie pulled from release amid controversy

Johnny Depp's movie about the murder of Notorious B.I.G., City of Lies, has been pulled a month before its scheduled release date. Unfortunately, it would appear that the film is no longer slated to be released on its original date.

Distributor Global Road Entertainment confirmed to industry press on Monday that the film would no longer be released in the United States on 7 September as planned but did not give further comment or any indication of a new release date.

Back in 2016, it was revealed that Johnny Depp had been cast in the film City Of Lies, an adaptation of Randall Sullivan's non-fiction book, LAbyrinth, that investigates the unsolved murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls in 1996 and 1997, respectively. It was set to arrive on the 46th birthday of the Notorious BIG, whose murder is the subject of the film. The distributor has yet to announce a new date for the Brad Furman-directed film, which stars Forest Whitaker as a journalist who partners with Depp's character.

City Of Lies has been shelved, for now. Depp is named in the suit alongside Furman and Depp's Infinitum Nihil production company. Last month, Depp was sued for allegedly assaulting location manager Greg "Rocky" Brooks on the movie's Los Angeles set. Brooks also alleges that the actor's breath "reeked of alcohol".

"In spite of fans voicing their concerns online about his presence in the movie after allegations of physically abusive behavior involving ex-wife Amber Heard emerged, the actor received applause and cheers from the Hall H crowd", says THR.
