The E-Tron is Audi's first fully electric vehicle going to mass production. The matrix LED head lamps on the e-tron also feature the electric model's-specific signature lighting consisting a series of horizontal bars at each corner. Though the company will continue to produce some diesel models, it now sees electric vehicles as key to its future. Lower-priced Audi battery-cars are expected to follow.
Audi is launching what it claims is an "electrification offensive" with the world premiere of the Audi e-tron in San Francisco.
Those motors draw from a 95kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with driving range rated at "over" 400km on the "realistic" WLTP testing procedure.
The car's two electric motors accelerate the e-tron from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 124 miles per hour. Top speed is rated at 124 miles per hour.
It's another matter when it comes to electric vehicles. Until now, Tesla is one of the pioneers in commercialising the technology for casual users. They're gaining momentum more rapidly in China, however, as the government there enacts new rules created to address that country's endemic smog problem.
An inside look at the e-tron.
Auto shoppers considering an electric auto today are no longer interested in their vehicle looking radically different from anything else on the road, said Brabec. The German luxury automaker, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, also announced it is partnering with Amazon to handle installation of home charging stations for E-Tron buyers.
Home charging systems will be available through a collaboration with Amazon Home Service.
Audi executives said home charging stations would cost about $1,000, depending on the home's electrical system. The purchase of an e-tron will include 1,000 kWh of charging at Electrify America sites over four years of ownership. A number of Audi models were equipped with some of the engines covered by that settlement. The system automatically lowers at higher speeds to improve efficiency and can be raised 2-inches higher than standard when switched to off-road mode. Called the E-tron GT, it'll be a coupe debuting in concept form at the 2018 LA Motor Show.
The e-tron and its forthcoming competitors will appeal to consumers who are curious about electric vehicles but nervous about reliability and dealer support, said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book.
UBS analyst Patrick Hummel said in a note on Tuesday that the e-tron "fails to set new benchmarks in the premium EV segment, even though we consider it better than the Mercedes EQC". Needless to say, e-tron customers will be able to control the charging processes as well as pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin via their smartphone with the myAudi app.
