A US government plane has arrived in Texas to transport the body of former President George H.W. Bush to Washington for a state funeral.

The Bushes will join other family at Joint Base Andrews for the afternoon arrival of the presidential aircraft carrying the casket, being called "Special Air Mission 41".

Former President George H.W. Bush's service dog remained loyal, standing guard over the president's casket Sunday and Monday.

When former President George H.W. Bush is laid to rest his funeral will be attended by living USA presidents as well as other D.C. politicians, dignitaries, and a member of Britain's royal family.

Clarence House said in an official statement: "The Prince of Wales will attend the state funeral of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush".

The 41st president died Friday at his home in Houston at 94.

Bush will be honored at a state funeral service at the cathedral today, which Trump has declared a national day of mourning.

The Trumps made a brief visit to the Capitol rotunda, where Bush's flag-draped coffin was resting as part of tributes to honor the 41st U.S. president and remember his extraordinary life. Trump himself has criticized the elder Bush on the campaign trail.

"George Bush was just a teenager when he volunteered for military service and became the Navy's youngest aviator", he said.

Family members, former Bush cabinet members, and senators and representatives gathered to mourn Bush.

After news broke of Bush's passing on Saturday, America's VetDogs tweeted a statement, saying: 'America's VetDogs is deeply saddened by the loss of President George H.W. Bush. Presidents are traditionally asked to eulogize presidents who have died - and in past state events like this, that has been the case - but the Bush family is unlike any other and has another president in the family who will fill that role.

He will be laid to rest alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April, and Robin Bush, the daughter who died of leukemia at age 3.

His ceremony, overseen by reverend Patrick J Conroy, was attended by leading Republicans such as House Speaker Paul Ryan, who spoke in praise of Mr Bush. Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.

One of Bush's major achievements was assembling the worldwide military coalition that liberated the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait from invading neighbor Iraq in 1991.

The 41st President of the United States died on November 30, 2018.

"When you have a president who's also a hero from the war, and you're in the military, you feel some kind of kinship", said Deans, 67, from Alexandria, Va.

After moving to Texas to work in the oil business, Bush turned his attention to politics in the 1960s.

"I served under both Bushes, which is pretty cool", said Timothy Hall, who served during the Gulf War and then in Afghanistan.

"Good, that's where I want to go", Bush said.
