The nation bid goodbye to George H.W. Bush with high praise, cannon salutes and gentle humor Wednesday, celebrating the life of the Texan who embraced a lifetime of service in Washington and was the last president to fight for the U.S.in wartime.
"You had seen a lot of chatty talk between the Clintons and the Obamas, the Carters", Wallace said, notes The Hill. Former first lady Laura Bush wiped her eyes with a tissue as her husband sat next to her.
The greetings between the former presidents and Trump were brief and courteous, albeit awkward. Next to them were Bill and Hillary Clinton, Trump's 2016 campaign rival, who stared straight ahead, stone-faced.
Trump has had a particularly acrimonious relationship with the Bush family, criticising George H.W. Bush and his sons.
Almost 30 years later, Mulroney again spared few superlatives Wednesday during a solemn and reverential state funeral at Washington's National Cathedral, predicting that the 41st president would go down in history as the strongest, bravest and most distinguished commander-in-chief the United States has ever known.
Since Bush's death, Trump has traded his usual provocative posture for one of respect and solemnity, tweeting before heading to the cathedral about "a day of celebration for a great man".
He was president from 1989-1993 and was known for overseeing a post-Cold War transition as well as the Gulf War. Although the Gulf War technically ended in February of 1991, the USA war on Iraq would continue for decades, first in the form of devastating sanctions and then in the 2003 invasion launched by George W. Bush.
"I don't think I would have shaken hands with him, I would just-nope couldn't do it", Lemon said.
At a ceremony full of pomp but also peppered with laughter, the capital's current political feuds were briefly set aside in honor of the late president, a naval aviator who survived being shot down by Japanese forces over the Pacific Ocean in World War Two, and a former head of the Central Intelligence Agency during the Cold War.
Wilson, author of "Everything Trump Touches Dies", noted that Bush's late wife, Barbara Bush, had requested that Trump stay away from her memorial.
Meacham recounted how comedian Dana Carvey once said that the key to doing a flawless impersonation of the 41st president was "Mr. Rogers trying to be John Wayne".
"Trying not to cry but that did me in", one Twitter user commented.
Trump's relationship with the Bush family has been tense. In Mark K. Updegrove's book "The Last Republicans", published a year ago, the elder Bush called Trump a "blowhard".
At a time of extraordinary and deep political fissures, Bush was looked to this week as a gracious servant of country who aimed to bridge the political divide.
