Hammers' striker Andy Carroll could make his long-awaited return from injury against his former club, after being an unused substitute against Manchester City last weekend.

The current Newcastle boss was effusive in his praise of Liverpool and Newcastle fans, but curiously omitted the Blues, for whom he was interim manager in the 2012/2013 season.

West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena believes that Newcastle United are more of a force now than they were at the start of the season and insists his team will need to focus at St. James' Park.

The Hammers chief continued: "I think Felipe is improving in every game he plays".

Marko Arnautovic and Felipe Anderson will lead the attack for Manuel Pellegrini's team. "We were good enough in the first half".

The Newcastle vs West Ham game should have been an evenly matched contest but the fact that Pellegrini has as many as six injury concerns puts the initiative aptly in Rafa Benitez's lap.

"We were too open, and they punished us for it".

The Mexico forward had been hampered by a virus, but Pellegrini said: "He has recovered his shape now and I hope he will continue to score lots of goals for us". What they spend, what we spend, you can see that on the pitch.

Ayoze Perez headed straight at keeper Lukasz Fabianski from Matt Ritchie's inviting 22nd-minute free-kick as the Magpies responded, but the visitors threatened repeatedly on the break and it took a good block by Javier Manquillo to deny Arnautovic after he had run on to Anderson's through ball and rounded Dubravka.

"Of course, we made three or four big mistakes, and West Ham took advantage of that".

"Still I think we did well enough to create and then maybe to score, but we didn't do it and the second goal, it was very hard for us".

West Ham made four changes as Cresswell, Noble, Snodgrass and Hernandez replaced Masuaku, Obiang, Diangana and Antonio.

"But I know he's a scorer and a player who plays very well inside the 18-yard-box, so I started with him today because before that he was not able to play a complete game".

Hernandez, 30, has previously been linked with Newcastle.
