After Bipartisan Backlash, Muslim Congresswoman Apologizes for 'Deeply Offensive' Anti-Semitic Tweet

"Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself", Mr Rose said.

The controversy started on Sunday night when Ms Omar suggested in a tweet that the outrage about her criticism of Israel from other lawmakers was driven by money.

"It's all about the Benjamins baby", she wrote, a reference to a 1997 rap song.

Her tweet linked to a statement by journalist Glenn Greenwald about Republicans' growing disdain for Omar's anti-Israel position. In the United States, we're allowed to criticize our own government: certainly foreign governments.

Critics of the tweet included many Republican members of Congress, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton and former ambassador to Israel under President Barack Obama Daniel B. Shapiro.

Gottheimer joined fellow House Democrat Elaine Luria in circulating a letter addressed to Pelosi and other leaders urging them to take "swift action" against anti-Semitic language by members.

Minnesota DFL U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar is under fire for Twitter exchanges that Democratic allies, along with Republicans and Jewish organizations, are condemning as hateful and anti-Semitic.

"As Democrats and as Americans, the entire Congress must be fully engaged in denouncing and rejecting all forms of hatred, racism, prejudice and discrimination wherever they are encountered". "My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole", Omar said in a statement Monday. Criticism of American policy toward any country is fair game, but this must be done on policy grounds.

Omar doesn't seem to miss an opportunity to criticize the Jewish people and Israel. Her spokesman told Politico yesterday that the tweets "speak for themselves".

Her office did not return a request for a comment from by The National. She insists her rejection of the Israeli government refers to its stance towards Palestinians and is not directed at Jewish people. The U.S. Defense Department also recently purchased Israel's Iron Dome Missile interception technology.

Last month, Omar expressed regret for saying in a 2012 tweet that Israel "has hypnotised the world" while carrying out "evil".

Back in October, McCarthy posted a tweet that suggested three Jewish billionaire Democratic donors - George Soros, Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg - were attempting to "buy" the 2018 midterm elections. These conservative Evangelicals, who also don't tend to be fond of Muslims, have become the single most important constituency in the Republican Party's base, and that fact has more to do with the relatively recent GOP solidarity with a particularly aggressive strain of Zionism than all the AIPACs and all the Sheldon Adelsons you can name.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, said on Twitter, "Rep. Omar's use of anti-Semitic stereotype was offensive and irresponsible".

"No, criticism of Israel isn't anti-semitism, just like criticism of a Muslim majority state isn't islamophobia, by default", wrote Hend Amry, a Libyan-American writer.
