Doc Rivers says he's agreed to long-term extension with Clippers

It's no secret that the Lakers will be parting ways with head coach Luke Walton at season's end, if not sooner.

Walton came under fire during an early-season meeting with Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson, and he's essentially been on the proverbial hot seat over recent months. Take this [option] out and extend and make it a longer deal.

Dan Patrick talks about how Rivers leaving the Clippers would have much more dire consequences especially when you look at how much the team is achieving now and their potential in free agency of landing major talent.

Rivers said he had an option to opt out of his Clippers contract this summer, but he and Ballmer mutually agreed to remove the clause.

Then Rivers' Clippers went out and kept the momentum going.

"We've done that a while ago, we just haven't, all the paperwork and that stuff is still being done", Rivers said when asked about his verbal agreement to a new extension with the Clippers. I think we are accomplishing that part, but not the first part yet. He gave me an out where I could opt out this summer.

"We thought this was the right fit. As my dad said, 'Trust everybody but cut the cards'". "(But) early in this year, we (Ballmer and I) both decided let's end this thing. "I'm here. My job is not done". One of them was obviously to win a world championship. I have great respect for him. "Steve was a man of his word".

The Clippers entered Tuesday at 41-30 and holding the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"This coach has chosen to stay where he's at and he's very happy about that", Rivers added, according to The Athletic's Jovan Buha.
