Los Angeles Lakers Part Ways With Walton

With Johnson no longer in the picture as president of basketball operations, there was some thought that perhaps Walton would remain head coach in some part because of support from Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.

When Luke Walton coaches his first game for the Sacramento Kings after the two sides agreed to a deal Saturday, he'll become the franchise's 10th coach in the 14 seasons since Sacramento last made the playoffs, in 2006.

Steve Kerr feels for Luke Walton and Kerr shares what Los Angeles is losing by parting ways with Walton.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years", Pelinka said in a statement.

A move to Sacramento then, with its young, raw roster, may be a better fit for Walton heading forward.

Walton was teammates with the Kings GM when he played for the Lakers.

"They are losing a guy who knows the game as well as anybody I've ever met", said Kerr, who had Walton on his coaching team before he left to join the Lakers in 2016.

Walton is rumored to be a candidate for the Sacramento Kings head coaching job immediately following the end of his tenure with the Lakers. I'm trying to figure out who's in charge [of the Lakers]. But at that time, Walton didn't even interview with the Kings.

As disappointing as 2018-19 may have been, the mandate with James on board and a handful of new veterans was a substantially different one than the one Walton originally signed on for.

Walton and superstar LeBron James, it seemed, never saw eye to eye. However, it has since been reported Walton was essentially fired and hoped to remain with the team. As only the top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs, the Lakers will miss the postseason. They're losing somebody who players believe in, players want to play for.

"Our new coach has to bring, first of all, the style that we had past year", Divac said.
